Why yoga? Why not just do core physiotherapy or breathing exercises or therapy for BDD?
Because yoga can enhance your core being. It brings you closer to who you really are.
While yoga is designed to align the body, its primary aim is mental, to allow you to pause the ocean waves of your mind. Via use of asana (poses), bhanda (binds) drishti (gaze) and breath, the pranic (energy) body is engaged. This prana travels to your mind, preparing you for meditation and pranayama (breath/ energy work- note that pranayama needs to be extremely carefully practised if you have a stressed-out core, as it can be contraindicated).
Having greater control of your mind can help you overcome addiction, insomnia, anxiety, body dysmorphic disorder and overeating- it is perhaps more effective than traditional rehab! It certainly compliments other treatments for addiction and mood disorders.
Much of what we think of as yoga, as opposed to what it can really offer, is akin to comparing a child’s crayon drawing to a Leonardo da Vinci masterpiece. Properly practiced, yoga can help you lead a more fulfilled, healthier, joyful and peaceful life. Yoga also draws on its sister science, Ayurveda (the knowledge of life) for advice on morning, elimination and cleansing practices, as well as nutrition, detox and nourishing, notes for doshas (body types) and how to repair dosha imbalances, plus healing with herbs.
Being a yogi has nothing to do with hyperextended instagram poses or putting your foot behind your ear! Nor being vegan or living in an ashram (you don’t need to be vegetarian to be a yogi!). In fact, the mark of a true yogi is the ability to sleep at will.
In modern yoga, there is no requirement to believe in God or be ‘spiritual’ (CORE YOGA REHAB is a guru-free zone), instead you connect with your own power, flexibility and strength.
CORE YOGA REHAB teaches you how to correctly move your core and use bhandas (including binding the pelvic floor and lower transverse abdominus). Not only are these binds key to restoring stressed cores, they prevent energy leakage (meaning you should be less tired after movement) and allow energy to rise in your body, to be utilised by your mind. These binds can be used in other breath-related movement and can bring changes in your energy, mood and concentration.
